If Your Business Is To Survive You Have To Do This
By Steve Hurst | July 31, 2009
Do you know why some businesses strive in an economy like now and others fail? There could be many reasons however, one main reason is “adaptability and change”….the ability to adapt to the current situation then change the way you’re doing business.
If you are unable to adapt to a situation, tweak or even change your “business model”, then you might head down a bumping road.
One of my favorite sayings is, “One definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and over again….but expecting different results.” In talking with other business owners who are struggling, I ask them why are they doing certain things that they do in there business….and more often than not, the reply I get is, “because I’ve always done it that way.”
My next question is always, “is it making you any money?” Usually the answer is, “No!” So, why do these people keep doing the same things? I don’t get it.
Now before you pass this off, think about your business for a moment. Analyze some of the things you are doing….really analyze….and see if you’re doing things that maybe you shouldn’t.
Quite honestly, sometimes we are doing those things because we enjoy doing them however… in reality it’s not helping the business. Let me give you an example.
Years ago, when I had a computer business, there were lots of us (I was one of them) that use to build our own computers and sell them. I know in my case, I made a good profit doing that. However, I recognized about years ago (right now I don’t remember the exact year) that this type of business model was not going to work for very long.
Even though most of us back then hated the name brand computers and our selling points were that we could build a better computer, more suited to the customer’s needs, etc….I could see the writing on the wall where it was going to be very difficult to compete with the big companies and offer everything they did and still make a profit on the sale of the computer.
Problem was I enjoyed building computers. But my profits were slowly dwindling away and I knew I had to change my business and I did. However, I watched others who did NOT change (or adapt) and they went under.
You might be asking, did you keep selling computers? Heck yeah, I did. But I changed my profit structure and built it around my value added services or “Creating Value In Everything I Do”. And that’s the real key here, “Create Value in Everything YOU Do“.
But keep this in mind….I didn’t keep building computers that were not making me any profits. I changed and adapted my business model to the situation (and quite frankly increased my profits).
Take a good hard look at your business….are you doing things you shouldn’t and what can you change or adapt to help your business situation?
To Your Success,
Steve
