Is Your Back Up Against the Wall…Don't Give Up!

By Steve Hurst | November 25, 2008

The holiday season is upon us and the gloom and doomers are harping on how bad the economy is and that it may even get worse. Please don’t buy into all the hype.

Now, I’m a realist and I know that many are struggling and having difficult times, but YOUR business doesn’t have to suffer. Not if you don’t want it too. You have to adopt the saying, “the tough get tougher.”

Here’s a little history lesson for you. There is a McGraw Hill study that found companies that cut marketing in the 1981-82 downturn increased sales by only 19% between 1980 and 1985. However, the companies that continued to market during the 1981-82 downturn enjoyed a 275% sales increase over the five year period 1980 to 1985.

For those of you that don’t remember or were not around, this was the end of the Jimmy Carter administration. It was the time of:

Double digit interest rates…
Double digit inflation…
Double digit unemployment…
High gas prices …
Gas shortages…
Credit crunch …
Real estate crash …

And you know what, we’re still here and the good businesses survived.

So, my advice is to grab yourself by the bootstraps and full steam ahead. Take a look at your business, where can you improve to get the maximum benefit for you and your customers. Look at your marketing, are you doing the best that you can to let your customers know about how much you care about them and what you can offer?

On a personal level, don’t get involved in negative conversations about “how bad things are.” Do whatever it takes to keep yourself (and employees if you have them) motivated. Read books, listen to audios that have a positive message.

I’m not saying this period of time will be easy, but with the right attitude and action, you will survive and be better for it.

Don’t give up!

To Your Success,

Steve
