Where’s Waldo…err, Steve…. And Is the Economy Bad?

By Steve Hurst | September 24, 2008

Hello all…remember me? I’m still around.

Yes, I know it’s been quite a while since I’ve posted a blog. And even though I’ve been very busy, I’m taking care of that right now.

You might be wondering, where have I been and what have I been doing? Both very good questions. I’m sure you’ve been reading and watching the “media” and the consensus of most is that the economy is bad. Well, I’ve been preparing for this situation.

Even though the overall economy “may” be bad, I refuse for my business to suffer and you should be that way too. My way to avoid being a participant in this “bad” economy is to work even harder taking care of my current customers and doing more marketing and sales to bring in new prospective customers.

And that…in a nutshell is what I’ve been doing and why I’ve been so busy. I’m not saying it’s an excuse for not writing any blogs, just a reason.

Throughout my business career, I’ve seen this “type” of economy. And I know that more than ever, I have to do what is necessary to keep my customers happy. You see, right now whether you or I believe the economy is bad or not…is NOT the issue. The REAL issue is does YOUR customer believe it.

Unfortunately, a lot of customers and potential customers DO believe this to be true making it harder for you to convince them to give you money for your products or services. As I stated earlier, I’ve stepped up my marketing and sales to help overcome this situation. It is something that has to be done and you should being doing this too.

You can’t pick up the newspaper, turn on the TV or browse the Internet without seeing how bad some of the financial institutes are doing and the overall effect this is happening. But I also contend that you don’t have to participate. You can make sure you’re doing what is necessary to get through this.

I’m going to make a statement that will be very unpopular at first, but maybe after my explanation, you’ll understand why I made it. Every now and then, we NEED an economy like this.

Right now you may be thinking that this is an outrageous statement but let me explain. During a “good” economy, you see a rise in new businesses. Everyone and their dog thinks they can start a business and make money. That’s okay, I’m all for the entrepreneurial spirit.

When the economy gets “tough”, you see the good businesses survive and the bad ones close up shop. Personally, getting rid of some of the bad businesses or “dead wood” in my mind is a good thing.

Before you bombard me with hate emails, I’m not saying that I’m in favor of the average person (like us) being hurt by the bad economy. Good example is right now with some of the financial institutions having their problems that could effect you and me. I say that, because right now, I have an account at one of those institutions that is having MAJOR problems.

The reason these businesses are having problems is because of poor decision making somewhere along the way and now they are suffering for it. The good businesses will survive…..the poorly ran ones, will probably fail.

And if you are one of the good businesses (and I hope you are) then it will mean even more opportunities for you. So, if you’re not working harder at keeping your existing customers and stepping up your marketing and sales processes, then get to it…NOW!!! It’s not the end of the world and prosperous times are waiting for those who are ready.

To Your Success,

Steve
